Our Story: The Evolution of the Land

In 2004, we stood on a piece of bare land 50km northeast of Calgary with a singular mission: to reclaim our health from an industrial food system. What began as a diverse family homestead has evolved over two decades of hard-won experience into a specialized crop farm dedicated to the world’s most resilient ancient grain—Proso Millet.

The Foundation: Building the Loop

For many years, our farm was a bustling, closed-loop ecosystem. We raised goats, chickens, and ducks, whose presence was vital in transforming our sandy clay soil. In those early days, we milked goats twice daily and crafted cheeses for our community, but the true purpose of our livestock was to heal the land. Their contribution allowed us to build the organic matter and soil health that now sustains our crops without the need for synthetic inputs.

Today: A Specialized Crop Farm

As our farm matured and our personal health needs evolved—navigating the realities of diabetes—we transitioned to become an exclusive crop operation. We took the lessons learned from our livestock years and applied them to large-scale, sustainable grain production.

We are now focused entirely on growing, cleaning, and processing Proso Millet. This "hero crop" is perfectly suited for Alberta’s semi-arid climate:

• Water Stewardship: It thrives on 50% less water than traditional grains.

• Soil Regeneration: We continue to build our soil by returning high-protein millet chaff back into the earth. This feeds the microorganisms and maintains the "living sponge" we spent two decades creating.

• Pure & Local: By focusing strictly on crops, we’ve streamlined our facility to ensure our millet is cleaned and packaged right here on the farm, guaranteeing a high-quality, high protein, high fibre gluten-free product.

Ethically Organic: Principles Over Paperwork

We are often asked if we are "Certified Organic." Our answer is simple: No but we are ethically organic.

While we choose not to pursue third-party certification, we operate with a standard of integrity that goes beyond a label. We do not use chemical fertilizers or GMO seeds because we eat exactly what we sell. Our "certification" is found in our history, our soil health, and the transparency we offer to every client.

A Family Partnership

Our farm is powered by the diverse expertise of three family members:

• Nav: Bridges the gap between the oilfield and the field. He provides the strategic financing and mechanical skill required to maintain our fleet of specialized tractors and equipment used for cultivating, seeding, and harvesting.

• Neena: The heartbeat of the operation. Neena manages the meticulous farm accounting and day-to-day logistics of our millet farm.

• Karn: With a background in Criminal Justice, Karn manages the farm’s legalities and the rigorous processing and packaging of the product. He views the food complexities of the farm—and the law—not as black and white, but as a series of grey areas that require creative, ethical problem-solving.
